(1957 – 1987)
Bill joined Staffordshire Police in 1955 and was accepted as a police constable in August of 1957. He spent the early part of his career in Burton on Trent where he became known for his enthusiasm to help others, a willing volunteer, and a strong work ethic. He quickly achieved promotion and used his position to influence and drive forward many initiatives to improve people lives, developing stronger and safer communities, and encouraging participation in sport and other activities to divert young people away from crime and disorder.
Bill quickly achieved promotion and throughout his service remained proactive as a police officer, always going that extra mile for the benefit of others. During his time at Cannock as an Inspector, he set up the ‘Peelers’ football club providing weekly competitive football for young people of all ages. He was instrumental in providing a BMX track for young people at Cheslyn Hay and was awarded the ‘Christopher James’ annual trophy for his contributions to the Cannock community.
In 1981 Staffordshire Police introduced the SPACE Programme (Staffordshire Police Activity and Community Enterprise), which was a scheme designed to engage young people in worthwhile activities during the school’s summer holiday, contributing to a reduction in crime and disorder. Bill was instrumental in setting this scheme up in conjunction with the Chief Constable, and it achieved national recognition.
His work continued when he was promoted to Chief Inspector at Stone where he worked with the local council to restore and promote youth services and opportunities in the town.
During his time as a senior officer a ‘Force support unit’ was set up, a team of elite officers specially selected to support police operations throughout the County and it was no surprise when Bill was selected as one of the leaders of this group.
Bill finished his career at Cannock in 1986 in the rank of Superintendent.
